Located in the Tijuca National Park, the classic Pedra da Gavea (Gavea Rock) is the largest coastal monolith on the planet, and it's certainly one of the most beautiful trails of all Rio de Janeiro. This trail is difficult, with a duration of approximately 5 to 7 hours (ascent and descent).
The trail is very pleasant with a good part being in the shade before reaching the "praça da bandeira" (flag square), a point where other trails converge. From there on, the trail is more open and offers an incredible view of Barra da Tijuca.
The most difficult stretch of the trail is a type of easy rock climbing known as the "carrasqueira." Despite the low difficulty factor, it's important to use proper security equipment.
Reaching the top of the mountain at an altitude of 844 meters, we have a broad view of Rio de Janeiro, highlighting the city and the Barra da Tijuca beaches, the Corcovado mountain (the home of the Christ the Redeemer Statue), the Two Brothers mountains, the neighboring city of Jacarepaguá, the São Conrado beach, and more.
